Wild Things Sign Catcher Collin Helms
CRESTWOOD, Il. (June 10) – The Washington Wild Things have signed catcher Collin Helms amid a flurry of moves since Sunday’s action ended. Helms played his college ball at Harding University, where he was teammates with current Wild Things’ pitcher Maddox Long.
Along with the Helms signing the Wild Things made the following moves since Sunday:
- Released C Three Hillier (Monday, June 8)
- Traded RHP Austin Eaton to the Chicago Dogs (AA) for a player to be named (Tuesday, June 9)
- Sold the contract of LHP Tyler Davis to the Boston Red Sox organization (Tuesday, June 9)
- Activated RHP Zach Kirby from the 7-Day Injured List (Today)
- Activated OF Jeff Liquori from the 14-Day Injured List (Today)
- Placed OF EJ Cumbo on the 14-Day Injured List (Today)
Helms played four seasons at Harding University and was All-GAC in all four seasons there. He was Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2025 and Second Team in 2024 and 2026. This season, he hit .269/.397/.511 in 51 games and had 49 hits in 182 at bats. He had 13 doubles, two triples and nine home runs with 47 RBI. He walked 26 times and was hit by a pitch 14 times against 22 strikeouts. Last season he started all 60 games (tying the HU single-season record) and slashed .322/.465/.498 with 53 runs, 12 doubles and seven home runs. He set the single-season school record with 25 HBPs.
Following the 2025 season, he played for Green Bay (with Long) in the Northwoods League and slashed .289/.405/.452 with 13 doubles, a triple, four homers and 28 RBI to go with 12 stolen bases and 23 walks against 24 strikeouts. The Rockers won the league title.
In 35 games in 2024, Helms played in 35 games for Harding and slashed .344/.463/.648 (1.111 OPS) with eight doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 28 RBI. The year prior in 2023 he slashed .366/.467/.593 with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs and 29 RBI in 38 games.
Helms will wear #1 and be active in Crestwood tonight for the first of two with the Windy City ThunderBolts at 7:35/6:35 p.m. CDT.
