Wild Things Fall in Schaumburg's Final AB
SCHAUMBURG, Il. (May 14) - After scoring first for the first time this season, the Wild Things couldn't hold on to the lead, and fell in the series opener at Schaumburg, 3-2. The Boomers got a sacrifice fly from centerfielder Connor Oliver in the eighth to take the lead for the first time in the contest, and for good.
Washington broke a 27.2-scoreless-inning streak with two runs to take the lead in the third inning. Centerfielder Mick Fennell tripled to right to start the frame and was knocked home by a groundout off the bat of shortstop Brett Marr. The next batter, lead-off man Blake Adams, hit his first home run of the season to make it 2-0.
It was that way until Schaumburg third baseman Matt Rose hit a two-run homer off Wild Things' reliever Nick Durazo to tie the game in the fifth. It remained scoreless until the eighth, when James Meeker allowed a walk and a double to start the frame before getting a strikeout. Meeker was lifted from the game in favor of left-hander BJ Sabol, who came on to face Oliver, a left-handed batter. Oliver managed to lift a fly ball to left to score the run and give the Boomers the lead.
Carter Johnson tossed 3.1 innings in the start for the Wild Things before Durazo came on and threw 2.2 frames. Meeker was charged with the loss.
The Wild Things managed just three base runners from the start of the fourth on, one of which reached on a Schaumburg error, and another, Adams, who was hit by a pitch to start the ninth. Adams would be sacrificed to second, but went no further.
The two teams will do battle tomorrow morning on a School Day at Boomers Stadium. First pitch is slated for noon ET, as Michael Austin goes for Washington against the Boomers' Connor Reed.
