Washington's Series Win Streak Ends in Loss to Gateway

WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington Wild Things [28-21] dropped their second game in a row Saturday night, at the hands of the Gateway Grizzlies [15-36] by a score of 7-2, to snap their streak of six-consecutive series wins.

In his first start of the 2017 season, left-handed pitcher Brandon Bixler went 3.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out two. While the Washington bullpen has been dominant as of late, Mark Smyth and Trevor Bradley and combined to allow four earned runs in relief of Bixler.

Left fielder Bralin Jackson recorded a hit to snap his 0-for-16 slump over the last few games including tonight, and first basemen Kane Sweeney walked to extend his on-base streak to 12 games. He has also been on base in all but one of his last 35 games.

Scoring in game two opened in the second inning, with both teams trading solo home runs. Thanks to Hector Roa (8) the game would be tied 1-1 after two innings.

However, Gateway exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to knock Washington’s starter out of the game and get to the bullpen early. The inning was capped off by a three-RBI double by third baseman Evan Rogers to give Gateway a 6-1 lead after four innings of play.

Both teams would score one more each in the game to bring the games final to 7-2 in favor of the Gateway Grizzlies.

Washington’s final game before the All Star Break is tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. for the finale of the Gateway Grizzlies series. Brian O’Keefe (2-3) gets the nod for Washington while Vincent Molesky starts for Gateway.
