Behind Cunningham, Four Home Runs, WT Avoid Sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things (29-24) ended their five-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 win to close out the series, and avoid the sweep, against the Windy City Thunderbolts (30-23). The five-game losing streak was the longest of the season.

After managing to score more than two runs just once during the five-game slide, the offense came alive and belted four home runs to back right-handed pitcher Chase Cunningham (7-1) en route to his seventh win of the season, putting him in a four-man tie for the league lead. Fellow Wild Thing Trevor Foss also has seven wins on the season.

In the first inning, left fielder Bralin Jackson hit a three-run home run down the left field line off right-handed pitcher Zac Westcott (5-4) that scored centerfielder Rashad Brown and first baseman Kane Sweeney. Third baseman Mike Hill went back to back with Jackson, launching a solo shot to left field to give the Wild Things a 4-0 lead after just one inning.

In the fourth inning, third basemen Riley Krane hit an RBI single to put the Thunderbolts on the board, making it 4-1 after four innings of play.

In the sixth inning, Sweeney joined the home-run crew in Sunday’s game, hitting a solo shot of his own to extend the Wild Things lead to 5-1 heading to the seventh inning. The final home run of the day would be Jackson’s second of the game, which scored two runs, and would bring the game to its final score of 7-3, breaking Washington’s skid.

The Wild Things travel to play Southern Illinois for a three-game series, with the series starting on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. The starting pitchers have not yet been named for each other team.
