Wild Things Walk Off Game 3, Advance to Conference Finals
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 13) – The Wild Things, down a run entering the ninth after leading 7-0, walked off the Y’alls on an RBI single by Cole Fowler with the bases full, winning 9-8 and punching their ticket to the Midwest Conference finals and a date with Evansville. Jeff Liquori tied the game earlier in the frame with a puncher through the right side plating Andrew Czech. Anthony Brocato scored the winning run.
Both starters were solid in the first three innings, as the scoring didn’t start until the fourth when Washington plated three on three hits and three errors. Brocato doubled Czech to third. On the play, the throw in to second kicked away, allowing Czech to score and the throw home to try and get him got away, allowing Brocato to go to third. The next hitter was Liquori, who grabbed an infield hit and an RBI bringing in Brocato. Liquori came in on a double play off the bat of Fowler.
Washington got four more in the fifth, starting with a bases-loaded walk issued to Brocato. Liquori’s RBI single made it 5-0, a groundout by Connor Peek brought in Washington’s sixth and an RBI single for Fowler made it 7-0.
It got ugly a bit from there. Florence responded with three in the sixth and five in the eighth to take the lead, highlighted by a two-run homer by Brett Blomquist in the sixth, a three-run homer by Dillon Baker in the eighth, a game-tying single by Blomquist and a go-ahead sac fly by Zade Richardson.
After Landon Ginn grabbed a 1-2-3 ninth to keep the deficit one, Liquori’s RBI single scoring Czech tied things at 8-8. Czech had got in safely to second on a fielder’s choice and hard baseball slide that broke up the play on an off-balance throw. After an intentional walk to Peek loaded the bases, Fowler battled the count full before gapping the walk-off single to right center, giving Washington the victory.
The Wild Things will be the only Division Champion to play in the conference finals. Games 1 and 2 are in Evansville Tuesday and Wednesday this week at 7:35/6:35 p.m. CDT. Tickets are on sale now for Games 3-5 with Games 4 and 5 if necessary, in the best of five. Game 3 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday, September 18, Game 4 at the same time Saturday, September 19 and Game 5 at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, September 20.
