Wild Things Blank Otters to Go Back Up By Four In Central
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Aug. 20) – Washington continued their season-long streak of not being swept in a 4-0 victory against the Evansville Otters Thursday. Drew Stegura shoved his way to the third victory of his Wild Things career with seven scoreless innings of five-hit baseball. He additionally punched out a career high nine in the win.
In the bottom of the first frame, newbie Miles Simington continued to shine. He singled to right center, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt and came home to score Washington’s first run after Andrew Czech grounded out to short.
In the third inning, fans would see a near perfect replication of the first inning, but this time with Kyle Edwards. He would score on a Billy Sullivan infield single. Andrew Czech extended Washington’s lead with his 25th home run of the season to score Sullivan and make the score 4-0.
With his two-run homer Andrew Czech became the single-season RBI record holder in Wild Things history with 96 runs batted in and counting. He passed Frontier League Hall of Famer and former Wild Thing Jacob Dempsey for first place in the single-season category (95, 2009).
Starting in the second and ending in the sixth, Stegura sat down 11 consecutive Otters. He mixed in three strikeouts and forced five flyouts over those batters. Mack Anglin worked a scoreless eighth. After throwing just two in-game pitches over the last 11 days, Landon Ginn came in to close and shut the door on Evansville with two strikeouts.
The offenses of Washington and Evansville were scoreless from the top of the fourth to the end of the game.
Washington will now go on the road for nine games before returning home on September 1. They will face the Joliet Slammers for a three-game set with tomorrow’s first pitch scheduled for 7:35 p.m. EDT tomorrow, August 21.
The win brought Washington’s playoff magic number down to five with a game impacting it still in action at the time of this release. If Windy City loses its lead and falls to Schaumburg, it’d come to four tonight.
