MVP Candidate Andrew Czech Named FL Player of the Week
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Aug. 17) – The Washington Wild Things have another weekly award from the Frontier League after a small hiatus from being selections as Andrew Czech has been tabbed Frontier League Player of the Week following a strong week in Mississippi.
Czech paced what was certainly not a bad week for the bats, going 12-for-22 with two doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored and 12 RBI. He also walked eight times allowing him to sport a slash line of .545/.667/.909 for the week (1.576 OPS). The week was capped by a multi-homer night Sunday, where he drove in a total of five.
For the season, Czech has had an MVP type of year putting him in the mix for that award in a few weeks. In 82 games, he has a slash of .336/.486/.694 (1.180 OPS) with 27 doubles, 23 homers and 92 RBI. He’s scored 77 runs and has walked 79 times. The 27 doubles are tied for the most in the league, his 23 homers are second behind Washington’s Anthony Brocato’s 26 and his 92 RBI are second behind Quebec’s Kyle Crowl with 94. His 79 walks trail only Schaumburg’s Alec Craig with 80. His OBP leads the league and his SLG and OPS are second.
In terms of single seasons for the Wild Things, it’s shaping up to be one of, if not the best. He’s five runs scored away from a new franchise record, five doubles from a franchise single-season record, four RBI from setting a new record, 10 walks from breaking his own franchise record of 88 drawn in 2023 and he’s on pace to challenge the on-base percentage and slugging percentage records.
Czech and his teammates enter the final 18 games of the regular season with a five-game lead in the Central Division and a playoff magic number of six. The club starts a three-game homestand and big series with Evansville tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at EQT Park.
