Wild Things Take Front End of Doubleheader in Comeback Fashion Late
BROCKTON, Ma. (July 30) – The Washington Wild Things captured their 11th in a row on the road in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader thanks to seventh-inning heroics bringing Washington back from having their late lead snatched in the bottom of the sixth. A Connor Peek fielder’s choice was the difference, which scored Caleb Ketchup to put Washington back in front before Landon Ginn earned the save in the bottom of the seventh.
Andrew Czech belted his 18th homer of the season to open the scoring in Washington’s half of the first but Brockton answered with three on five hits against Wild Things’ starter Drew Stegura, who settled in after that. He allowed an unearned run in the second to make it 4-2 Brockton after two but finished five with four runs against (three earned) in his second pro start.
The Wild Things scored three times in the fifth as Anthony Brocato hit a solo homer with two outs to start the run, his fifth since Sunday and 24th of the season, making it 4-3. Washington tied the game on an RBI single by Jeff Liquori and took the lead on a wild pitch.
The Rox got a big two-run single by Nick Marola in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead but Washington did damage against Brockton’s all-star closer again once it got to the seventh. O’Donnell walked both Andrew Czech and Caleb Ketchup to start the inning. On a bunt attempt by Liquori, he’d come up empty but the pitch sailed to the backstop, allowing both to move up. Liquori lifted a game-tying sac fly and Connor Peek hit a fielder’s choice to third that Ketchup beat the throw home easily to put the Wild Things in front, 7-6.
Ginn finished it off for Eldridge Armstrong III, who got an inning-ending fly out to close the sixth, earning the young righty his second win as a Wild Thing in just his fourth appearance from the pen. Ginn’s 1-2-3 seventh earned him his ninth save of the season.
Game two of the twinbill and the finale of the series will begin shortly as Washington seeks the sweep.
