Wild Things Fall in Series Opener in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, Il. (August 1) – The Wild Things suffered defeat at the hands of the Schaumburg Boomers, 9-1, in Tuesday’s series opener, as the Boomers pulled away late with five runs in innings six through eight combined.

Schaumburg also scored early against Washington, which sent righty Hayden Shenefield to the mound with a six quality-start streak. Shenefield was an out away from his seventh-straight quality start, but back-to-back, two-out doubles in the sixth ended that big. Shenefield suffered the loss, his third, after allowing five runs (four earned) in six innings of work.

The Boomers scored an unearned run on an error by Wes Darvill in the first, twice in the third on a two-run homer by hot hand Kokko Figueiredo, once in the fourth on an RBI single by Sonny Ulliana. The two-out double in the sixth was by Brett Milazzo that scored the run. Schaumburg added two in the seventh on a single and a sac fly and used the same scoring plays to plate two in the eighth. The runs came off Kyle White and Arrison Perez late, with both of Perez’ runs being unearned.

Washington managed just two hits in the loss: one from Nick Gotta and one from Robert Chayka. Chayka’s was a solo homer, his fourth, in the sixth. Gotta left the game with an apparent knee injury in the seventh.

The Wild Things will send righty Zach Kirby to the mound in tomorrow’s middle game. He’ll be opposed by Boomer lefty Kobey Schlotman. First pitch is slated for 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT from Wintrust Field.
