Washington Splits Doubleheader with Freedom
WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 22) - The Washington Wild Things snapped a five-game losing streak with a win in game one of Thursday's doubleheader with the Freedom, before falling in game two. Wander Franco had three hits in the twinbill, while Lucas Herbert and Saige Jenco homered in games one and two, respectively.
The Wild Things got on the board early in game one after Wander Franco doubled in his first at bat, allowing right fielder Hector Roa to drive him home for his ninth RBI of the season.Florence got the next run, scoring in the top of the fourth against starter John Havird to tie the game.
Catcher Lucas Herbert then hit his first home run of the season, and with it drove in three to give Washington a 4-1 lead after four innings. The Freedom got a run back in the fifth, but that was all they'd get as the Wild Things snapped their skid.
Havird took a no decision after going 4.1 innings in the seven-inning contest. The former Beach Bum struck out four and allowed six hits and two runs (one earned). James Meeker got the win in relief, logging 1.2 scoreless innings, and Zach Strecker earned his third save of the season in the victory.
Game two didn't go quite as well for the Things, as Florence piled up nine runs against the first two Wild Things to pitch. Nick Durazo yielded three of those in his 3.1 innings of work in the spot start from the pen, while Roberto Delgado, who was activated today off the injured list, was tagged for six runs.
Saige Jenco hit his two run home run in the fifth, while Shaine Hughes was responsible for Washington's third-inning run, plating Brett Marr with a base hit.
BJ Sabol, after an outlier outing yesterday, pitched two scoreless innings from the bullpen.
The Wild Things turn their attention now to a three-game weekend series with the Gateway Grizzlies at Wild Things Park. First pitch for the opener Friday is slated for 7:05 p.m.
