Washington Places Apicella on DL, Activates RHP Mark Smyth

WASHINGTON, Pa., June 3 - Today, the Washington Wild Things announced a roster move, activating right-handed pitcher Mark Smyth from the suspended list, and in a corresponding move, placed left-handed pitcher Vince Apicella on the seven-day disabled list.

Smyth will be active for the first time as a Wild Thing, after spending the 2016 season pitching in the Canadian-American Association for Les Capitales de Quebec, pitching to a 2-3 record with a 4.50 earned run average in 14 appearances. Smyth is an alumnus of West Liberty University in West Virginia, where he pitched to a first-team All-Mountain East Conference accolade in 2015 and also holds the career wins record with 24.

So far in the 2017 campaign, Apicella has appeared in four games and totaled 6.2 innings for the Wild Things. The southpaw has given up six hits and three earned runs, while walking two and striking out seven.

The Wild Things play game two of a three-game, weekend set tonight against Traverse City at Wild Things Park with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
