Late Rally Not Enough for Washington to Get By Southern Illinois

WASHINGTON, PA (July 17, 2016) – The Washington Wild Things completed their series with the Southern Illinois Miners Sunday at CONSOL Energy Park. The Miners swept the series with an 11-7 win. Chase Cunningham surrendered seven hits and struck out three in four innings pitched. Jarett Miller secured the win for the Miners, surrendering nine hits and striking out three in 6.2 innings pitched.

The Miners bats exploded for six runs in the top of the second. Singles from Steve Marino and Riley Moore set up RBI singles from Edison Sanchez, Aaron Gates, Shane Kennedy, and Craig Massey to give Southern Illinois a 6-0 lead. Wild Things shortstop Austin Wobrock registered a single in the 3rd but solid pitching prevented any runners from scoring.

Craig Massey extended the lead for the Miners in the top of the 4th with an RBI triple that brought home Francisco Rosario, making the score 7-0. David Popkins found himself in scoring position with a double but again could not reach home. Southern Illinois added some insurance in the sixth with four more runs courtesy of RBI singles from Craig Massey, Nolan Earley and an RBI double from Steve Marino.

Washington answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 6th off an RBI double from David Popkins that brought home Ricky Rodriguez, cutting the lead to 11-1. The Wild Things hitting continued into the 7th with an RBI double from Jamodrick McGruder cutting the lead once more to 11-2. A Ricky Rodriguez RBI triple and Chris Grayson RBI single made the score 11-4. Jamodrick McGruder added another run for Washington in the bottom of the 9th with a solo home run, making the score 11-5. David Popkins also drove in runs with a two run shot, cutting the lead to 11-7.
