Ten Runs Not Enough for Washington

MARION, IL – The Washington Wild Things (29-29) and Southern Illinois Miners (42-17) battled it out in an all out runs battle Sunday evening at Rent One Park. The Miners completed the series sweep in comeback fashion, defeating Washington in a 12-10 final score victory.

The Wild Things stormed out in front with lead off singles from Andrew Heck, Chris Grayson and an RBI single from Ricky Rodriguez that gave Washington an early 1-0 lead. Kyle Pollock followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Grayson, extending the lead to 2-0. Jimmy Yezzo finished of the 1st inning scoring with an RBI single that put the Wild Things up 3-0. Washington continued their dominance into the 2nd with a two run home run from Chris Grayson and RBI double from David Popkins again extending the lead to 6-0. Kyle Pollock tacked on another run with an RBI single of his own.

The Miners began their scoring in the bottom of the 3rd on a Shane Kennedy sacrifice fly to left field that cut the lead to 7-1. Washington answered with three more runs in the top of the 4th with a David Popkins two run RBI double and sacrifice fly from Kyle Pollock. The Miners began their comeback in the top of the 5th, scoring five runs. A pair of RBI singles from Nolan Earley and Alex De Leon cut the lead to 10-3. A sacrifice fly from Riley Moore and two run RBI double from Edison Sanchez cut into the lead once more making it 10-6.

Southern Illinois added five more runs in the bottom of the 6th on a base runner being walked home and grand slam from Steve Marino that put the Miners out in front 11-10. Southern Illinois tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th with a sacrifice fly from Alex De Leon that gave the Miners a 12-10 final score.
