Washington Triumphs in Doubleheader against Lake Erie

WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington Wild Things (34-37) and the Lake Erie Crushers (32-41) faced-off in an August 9, 2016 doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park; Washington triumphed over Lake Erie in both games, ending their losing streak.

Game one was a continuation of a suspended May 22, 2016 matchup of the two teams. RHP Zac Grotz (3-2) earned the win on the mound for Washington; Grotz produced seven strikeouts and allowed only four hits in his six innings on the hill. Grotz lowers his ERA to 1.12.

Jimmy Yezzo scored the solo run of the game in the eighth. Yezzo shot a triple, and was drove in by a David Popkins double. Washington had five hits in the outing, winning the outing 1-0.

Game two was a rubber match as RHP Chase Cunningham (4-8) and Steve Hagen (4-5) squared off on the mound. Cunningham picked up the win for Washington, and LHP Devon Davis (1-1) earned the save on the night.

Washington was the first to score when Ricky Rodriguez and David Popkins hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first. Lake Erie answered with a run in the third, tying the game. However, Washington fought back in the bottom half with three runs from a Jimmy Yezzo homerun and an Alvaro Gonzalez RBI double. Lake Erie threatened in the sixth, earning two runs, but were not able to capture the lead from the Wild Things. Washington defeated the Crushers 4-3.
