WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced that RHP Chris Smith’s contract has been sold to the New York Yankees.

Smith has been playing for the Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League during the 2012-13 off-season and was named to the Australian Baseball All-Star Team.  Smith has an ERA of 2.31 in nine starts for Brisbane, with a 3-3 record and 65 strikeouts.

Smith was signed by the Wild Things in July of 2011 and has been a familiar face in the starting rotation since then.  In 2012 Smith went 9-6 in 19 starts, with a 2.92 ERA and 116 strikeouts.  Smith tossed two complete game shutouts for the Wild Things in 2012.

“Chris was a valuable part of our starting rotation and will be missed, but I wish him all the best in the Yankees system.  He has the skills that it takes to make it in the majors and I look forward to watching him develop those skills further with the Yankees,” said Wild Things’ Assistant General Manager Steven Zavacky.

The Wild Things will host the Southern Illinois Miners for their 2013 Home Opener on May 24th.  For information on season tickets and group outings, call or visit the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.  Box Office hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.  For further information, log onto www.washingtonwildthings.com.
