Host Families

The Washington Wild Things are looking for host families for the 2012 season. Host families invite a player or member of the coaching staff into their home for the duration of the season (mid-May through early September), plus spring training and playoffs.

Because minor league baseball players are paid on a seasonal basis and earn much, much less than players in the Major Leagues, host families are needed to help reduce the players’ financial burden of pursuing their dreams of playing professional baseball. Each host family provides a player with a stable, clean, and healthy environment to live in while in southwestern Pennsylvania.

To ensure a good experience for both host families and players, the Wild Things take extra care in matching players with prospective hosts. Some of the considerations include:

  • Most host families will host one player. However, host families with the ability to host two players or a player and spouse are also needed.
  • Host families must be willing to commit to the entire season.
  • Host families should be aware that the players will be away on road trips for half of the summer and that they will leave in the early afternoon and return after night games during homestands.
  • Host families witness the day-to-day trials and tribulations of a minor league ballplayer. Host families will be a big part of their success in Washington and in their career as baseball players. A good ‘home’ environment can help contribute to better on-field performance. The players form connections to their families that last a lifetime.
