Washington Maintains 6.5 Game Lead in East Division
Wild Things Take 1-0 Victory From the Bolts
Ledbetter and Hunton face-off in classic pitcher’s duel
Washington, PA- The Washington Wild Things (37-23), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, took a 1-0 victory from the Windy City Thunderbolts (43-18) in a game that used a combined four pitchers.
After a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Thunderbolts the previous night, the two clubs once again engaged in a low-scoring affair. Neither pitcher on either side would give ground as the teams combined for a total of one run.
Neither team would score until the 5th inning. Rene Quintana led off the inning with a single and would later be moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Earnhart. One batter later, Wild Things’ centerfielder Chris Sidick ripped a single that scored Quintana from second and put the Wild Things on top 1-0.
That one run would be all the Wild Things would need as Wild Things’ starter Aaron Ledbetter (8-1) put the Wild Things in perfect position to pick up the win giving up no runs on three hits while striking out seven Bolts in seven innings of work. Meanwhile, Thunderbolts starter Brock Hunton also had a strong outing as he would only allow one run on five hits and striking out five Wild Things.
The Wild Things’ relief corps took over from their as Travis Risser was able to close out the game for the Wild Things’ win. Risser pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th inning to pick up the save for the Wild Things. Great defense also aided the Wild Things as Chris Sidick and Jarod Rine each had a diving catch to ensure the victory.
The Wild Things close out their series against the Thunderbolts tomorrow at 4:05 pm. The Wild Things will then return home for a six game homestand starting off against the Rockford Riverhawks beginning Monday, July 30th at 7:05 pm. For tickets, call the box office at 724-250-9555.
