GAME RECAP
Wild Things sweep Beach Bums
Washington riding 8-game win streak

Washington, PA – The Washington Wild Things (26-16), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, sent the biggest crowd of the season at CONSOL Energy Park home happy with an exciting 4-3 come from behind victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums (15-28) Friday night.

The Wild Things improved their season-long winning streak to eight consecutive games in front of 3,840 Wild Things’ faithful. The Wild Things only had three hits through seven innings against the Beach Bums, but they matched that total in the eighth inning to take the lead on a go-ahead RBI double by Nathan Messner.

J.J. Hollenbeck (2-2) pitched well in six innings, allowing four hits and striking out two for the Wild Things, but received the no decision. Patrick Sadler (3-1), making his first appearance since June 16, earned the win in his one inning of relief. Gus Hlebovy picked up the save in the ninth, striking out two on his 25th birthday, for his seventh save on the season.

Washington got off to an early lead in the second inning against Traverse City starter David Nathanson. With Robbie Knapp and Mario Garza on base in scoring position, Rene Quintana pulled through with an RBI double to plate both runners for a 2-0 advantage.

An error at the top of the sixth inning by first baseman Nathan Messner came back to haunt the Wild Things. After Steve Young reached first on Messner’s error, Jeff Brown sent a J.J. Hollenbeck pitch deep over the left-field wall to tie the contest at two apiece.

In the seventh, the Beach Bums took their first lead of the series since the seventh inning of game one. With Jeff Vincent aboard on a leadoff double, he was pushed home with two outs by a Zack Kalter bloop single to left field, which was just out of reach of Wild Things’ shortstop Rene Quintana, making it 3-2 in favor of Traverse City.

Chris Sidick’s first hit of the ballgame was a big one for the Wild Things. Still trailing by one in the eighth with two outs, Sidick crushed his fourth home run of the season over the right-field fence to knot the score at three. Jarod Rine and Messner then continued the rally with back-to-back doubles, with Messner’s bringing in the winning run.

After taking three from the Beach Bums, the Wild Things will attempt to keep their winning streak alive against the Kalamazoo Kings. The three-game series begins Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call the Wild Things’ box office at 724-250-9555.
