Ledbetter’s shutout halts Otters for win
Knapp key in Wild Things’ scoring
Evansville, IN – The Washington Wild Things (15-10), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, capped off their six-game road trip on a high note as they defeated the Evansville Otters (12-14) at Historic Bosse Field 3-0.
Wild Things’ ace Aaron Ledbetter (4-0) pitched a gem to get the team off a recent three-game skid. He went the distance for his first complete-game shutout of the season for Washington, giving up just two hits, striking out four and walking none.
Designated hitter Robbie Knapp took part in all of Washington’s runs, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI (28).
Starters Aaron Ledbetter for Washington and Jake Haggerty for Evansville kept the lineups in check early as they both allowed only one hit through the first three innings. However, only Ledbetter would retain his early dominance through the rest of the ballgame.
The Wild Things spotted Ledbetter a one-run lead in the fifth by taking advantage of a couple Otters’ mistakes. Robbie Knapp led off the inning after being hit by a Haggerty pitch in the back. As Knapp took his lead off first, Haggerty threw away the pick-off throw to first that allowed Knapp to advance to second base. Rene Quintana capitalized two batters later by knocking in Knapp with a double to right-center field.
In the sixth inning, Washington did all their damage with two outs. Nathan Messner came up to bat with two outs, but he singled to keep the inning going. Knapp then accounted for the Wild Things’ next run when he laced an RBI double to plate Messner. After reaching third base on a wild pitch from Haggerty, lefty Mario Garza hit an opposite-field single to score Knapp and make it a 3-0 advantage for Washington.
It was all Ledbetter from there on out as he retired 17 consecutive Otters’ batters from the fifth inning through the ninth to pick up the complete-game shutout.
The victory gives the Wild Things a 2-4 record on their longest road swing of the season so far.
The Wild Things will make their return home Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. to host the Southern Illinois Miners at CONSOL Energy Park. For tickets, call the Wild Things box office at 724-250-9555.
