Wild Things Rebound on the Road against Florence
Mario Garza and Kyle Padgett Both Homer in Road Victory
Florence, KY – The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, started their first road trip of the season on the right foot, taking a 8-1 victory from the division leading Florence Freedom.
The Wild Things wasted no time against the Freedom. Lead off batter Chris Sidick started the game with a double and then scored on the next play on a double by leftfielder Matt Sutton. Sidick didn’t stop there. He added an RBI triple in the second inning to increase the lead to 2-0. Sutton brought Sidick home on the next play with a single.
The offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the night. In the fifth inning, Sidick recorded a base hit and later scored on sacrifice fly by right fielder Jarod Rine. Designated hitter Mario Garza came to the plate next and launched a solo home run to dead center field for his first of the season. The home run extended Washington’s lead to 5-0.
Florence got on the board in the fifth. The Freedom loaded the bases with no outs and scored on a groundout by Reggie Watson. That was all they would get after starting pitcher Patrick Stanley forced two fly outs to end the inning.
The Wild Things answered in the sixth when third baseman Ben Ramsey scored on an RBI infield single by shortstop Kyle Padgett to move the score to 6-1. Catcher Pat O’Brien added another run on a Kyle Werman single.
The Freedom loaded the bases again in the seventh inning trailing 7-1. Relief pitcher Jeff Michael was able to get out of the jam by forcing a groundout to end the inning and keep the six run lead.
Padgett added another solo home run in the eighth inning to score Washington’s eighth run of the game and record the second home run for the team.
The score would stay at 8-1 after J.J. Hollenbeck came in to close the game out in the ninth. He retired three Freedom batters to record the save.
The win moved the Wild Things’ record to 2-1 on the season and in a tie for first place in the East division.
The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park Sunday to host Florence at 6:35 p.m. and for an afternoon game Monday at 2:05 p.m. For tickets, call the box office at 724-250-9555.
